Colin Gottron aspires to become an emergency room physician, just like his mom. “My heart for service is what motivates me to pursue a future in medicine,” he said.

Majoring in biochemistry with minors in biomedical sciences and Spanish for healthcare professions, Colin hails from Centerville, Ohio, where he attended Centerville High School.

His mom is an ER physician at Miami Valley Hospital, and Colin has long admired her commitment to serving not just her patients, but family, friends, and neighbors.

“This past summer I worked as a nursing assistant at a nursing home, and it only boosted my passion and energy for medicine,” he said.

Prior to coming to «Ӱҵ, Colin didn’t know anything about the biochemistry field. Now he’s loving the subject material and «Ӱҵ’s small class sizes.

“Honestly, school doesn’t feel like a chore, but more of a privilege. I think that is the biggest blessing because I enjoy going to class, and this is a testament to the professors who create that environment.”

Outside the classroom, Colin is a proud member of the «Ӱҵ men’s soccer team—one of the top 25 Division III programs in the country.

“The soccer team has provided me with some of my best friends and mentors. I can always count on them to help me with every aspect of my life.”

His most memorable «Ӱҵ moment thus far was making the Sweet 16 in the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament and seeing so many Polar Bear fans—including President Melissa Baumann—in Boston cheering on the team.

Playing a sport, he adds, is building his perseverance for medical school.

“The path (to becoming an ER physician) is long and requires a lot of dedication, but I think it is important to stay present and enjoy the struggles along the path.”
